1) Definition of Giclée:
• Professionally produced prints using archival inks and inkjet technology
• Utilizes archival inks, paper, and color quality control
• Derived from the French word “giclur” meaning “nozzle”
• Considered the standard for high-quality fine art printing
2) Fine Art Originals:
• Refers to art made with traditional hand techniques
• Demonstrates mastery and craftsmanship through manual processes
3) Types of Art Prints:
Reproductions:
• Most common type seen online or in retail stores
• Terms like “art prints,” “fine art prints,” or “giclée prints” denote quality
• “Fine art” may indicate the original image was a piece of fine art
Archival:
• Materials suitable for long-term preservation
• Will not yellow or deteriorate over time
• Includes archival inks, papers, protectant, adhesives, and plastics
4) Print Series:
• Open or Limited Edition number of prints of the same design
• Limited edition prints are numbered to indicate their place in the series
(e.g., 1/50, 2/50...50/50).
• Each print is technically unique due to various printing techniques
5) Open Edition vs. Limited Edition:
Open Edition:
• An unlimited number of prints can be created and sold
Limited Edition:
• The artist selects a fixed number of prints for an image

Putting terms like “art” or “fine art” in front of prints doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but it likely signifies the quality of the print. I use the term “fine art” when I refer to my prints because I am printing giclée prints that are sourced with archival inks and luxurious, archival canvas and paper. I also use it to indicate that the original image that is being reproduced was a piece of original fine art.
